JULY 2006 NEWSLETTER

A big welcome to the BMX season for 2006-2007.  The new committee has met and has some new members, so welcome to Lance Middleton and Louise Byrne.

Club nights start on Wednesday 23rd August.  This will give riders the opportunity to get some racing in before the pre-norths and the North Island Titles.  Lets hope the weather is kinder to us this season!

BMX is a family sport and we all have or have had children racing.  The sport relies on the services of parents to run the sport and we always need help on club nights and race days.  We need, start gate operators, call-up personnel, finish line judges, marshals on corners, commentator, barbecue chefs, shop staff, people to do registration, and first aid folk.  The roster system worked well last year and will be used again.  If you are unable to attend racing on your rostered night, could you please arrange for someone to swap/fill your position.  If you are unsure of what a job involves we are more than happy to buddy you up or show you the ropes. Parents are welcome to come into the Club rooms and join in.

A very big thank you to Laurie and all the other riders/parents that have assisted in the recent working bees.

NEW LICENSING PERIOD

BMXNZ is changing the current licensing period which at present is from the start of the season

(1 August) until the end of the season (31 July).  The new licensing period will be from 1 January until 31 December.

To assist with the transition to the new licensing period BMXNZ are offering two options for licensing:

Option 1:        From the start of the racing season until the 31st December 2006

Option 2:        From the start of the racing season until the 31st December 2007

A small discount has been factored into the BMXNZ licensing fee for riders choosing option 2.  The attached Hamilton BMX Club membership form has the fees and options on it however, if you have any questions regarding the change to the new system please ask and we will try to answer your questions.

For riders choosing option 1 your license will expire on the 31st December 2006.  Please keep this in mind as BMXNZ has made it very clear to us that any NQM’s raced while unlicensed will not be given to you.  You may also find that some clubs may not accept your entries or allow you to ride while unlicensed.

LAKE MACQUARIE BMX CLUB/HAMILTON BMX CLUB CULTURAL EXCHANGE

The Lake Macquarie BMX Club in NSW, Australia is the Hamilton BMX Club’s ‘Sister Club’.  Our Committee have been in contact with this club during the past year to get this up and running.   We are really excited about this venture as it will work as a cultural exchange between the two clubs.

The meeting that Lake Macquarie will be sending riders over for will be the Mooloo Champs in March.  This meeting was chosen for its uniqueness and it will also give riders from Australia the opportunity to race 2 different tracks during their weekend with us.  Lake Macquarie were unable to send riders last March as they were required by their local council to fence their track and they needed to work to tight schedule to complete this task.

The meeting that Lake Macquarie would like Hamilton riders to attend is their tri-series held on the 2nd and 3rd of September.  With this meeting riders race 1 track on Saturday morning, another track on Saturday afternoon and a third track on Sunday morning.

The Committee has decided to reopen the Scholarship with the intention of sending a rider/s to Lake Macquarie in September.  Applications for this will close on the 4th August.  For riders interested in applying please submit your C.V. to either Michelle or Annette by this date.

For riders that would like to attend this meeting as part of our sister-club exchange but choose not to apply for the scholarship please also let Michelle or Annette know so that billet arrangements can be made.

A QUICK NOTE FROM ANNETTE SLEGH:  I have now been to Lake Macquarie two years in a row.  The track is awesome and other Hamilton members are saying this as well.  The people that I have met from that club are really nice and have made us feel so welcome.  Scott was billeted with this club as a Mighty 11 in June and the experience for him is one he will never forget.  The family were really lovely (they even had a birthday present for him at Tamworth!).  I know these boys are going to stay in contact and he is already asking when can he go back!  Darren from the Lake Mac track arranged billeting for Shannon as well.  This was a last minute thing but Shannon decided ‘why not’ and grabbed the opportunity to stay with an Ausy family. Her billet family were also really lovely and she went ten pin bowling with the family on the Saturday night.  Both families really looked after my kids, they both had a very rewarding experience and have come away with memories that they will treasure for a very long time.  Other clubs have tried to organise sister-clubs but have been unsuccessful so we are very fortunate to have this opportunity for our riders.

____________________________________________________________

Congratulations to all are Hamilton riders who travelled to Australia to ride in Tamworth and Lake Macquarie. We don’t have all the official results but hope to have them for the next newsletter.  We heard everyone had a great time and all rode well.  Below are the results that we have so far:

Lake Macquarie Freak Industries Challenge Sunday 4th June:

Pro Open Ladies 3rd Lisa Horlar, A Men 3rd Axel Jones, AA Men Hayden De Boer, Richard Stratford and Jason Kelly raced hard with tough competition, Harris Thurgood competed in the 7 year sprockets and achieved good placings in his races, 9yr boys 3rd James Nattrass, 10yr boys 1st Mitchell Wright,

11yr girls 1st Madison Eruera and 5th Shannon Slegh, 11yr boys 4th Alex Eruera, 12yr girls 2nd Nicole Wright, 12yr boys 3rd Scott Slegh, 15yr girls 2nd Tayla Rika, 19+ Ladies CR 1st Alice Rika,

Teenage Rampage Girls 5th Tayla Rika

The drought broke at Tamworth on the Saturday morning which was great for them as they need the rain, but we could have done without it.  Racing was cancelled for the day and all racing was on Sunday.  It was windy, a bit wet still and freezing.  Both teams tried their best with very few points between final placings.  Neither the seniors or the juniors bought cups home but a girls team joined the test and NZ were successful – well done girls!

Don’t forget to get your CVs in for the scholarship asap so you too can experience Aussie racing. Any questions or if you want to know more contact Michelle or Annette.
